The Lusty Vegan: But Really, Do Vegans Taste Better?

Sexy kinda! This shot was taken while goofing off on the Lusty Vegan book set.

I’ve been wanting to tackle this subject for quite some time now; it’s a running joke in the vegan community that vegans “taste better.” Funny as it may be, it’s also founded on truth. The healthier you eat, the better you feel, look, taste, and smell. Now mind you that vegan is not synonymous with healthy, but if you’re eating a plant-based diet rich in whole grains, legumes, and veggies, and limiting processed foods and artificial fillers, then you’re on the right track.

Now, I can’t vouch personally that vegans taste better. I’ve never dated a vegan. I have, however, dated and slept with partners whose diets span the entire range of healthfulness, from clean-eating pseudo vegetarians, to mister “I only eat noodles,” to a total meat junkie and one guy who would only eat tuna salad and bacon. The healthier the eater, the better tasting their spunk. There, I said it.

Meat and dairy are acidic and hard for your body to digest, and this affects not only the way you taste, but the way you smell as well. A 2006 study, published in the journal Chemical Senses, found that vegetarians had a more attractive body odor than those in the study eating meat. The vegetarian participants were rated as having a “less intense” odor than their meat-eating adversaries.

If you need more proof that what you eat impacts how you smell, think about the last time you ate asparagus. It takes something like 20 minutes for the asparagus to work its way through your system and stink up your pee. Now imagine what it’s doing to your juices. The same goes for beets; every time I eat beets, my bathroom business is bright pink and reminds me for the next 2 to 3 days what I have been eating. There’s no denying it – what we eat has an affect on our body’s odor, coloration, and—yep—taste.

Meat and dairy aside, those who eat diets heavy in pungent foods like onion, garlic, chives and leeks often have more pungent-tasting sexbits and ejaculate, as well as sharper body odor overall. So if your sweetie is tasting, well, not too sweet, maybe suggest they cut back on the pungent veggies.

I would like to add that I once dated a smoker who was struggling to quit on and off for the entirety of our relationship. Well, every off period, his flavor was much more appealing than when he was back to smoking. If his breath and clothes didn’t give away his progress, his semen most definitely did.

So, while I don’t want to say that it’s a plant-based diet for sure that makes you taste (and smell) better, cleaning up your diet overall does have an incredible impact on your flavor, and vegans in general tend to be healthier than your average meat-munching homosapien.

Okay, have you done your own field research on this subject? I want to know!
